That gap exists before you even look at the tank price itself. ## Lifespan and failure modes Concrete's headline weakness in septic service is **H2S corrosion**. Anaerobic decomposition inside the tank produces hydrogen sulphide gas; bacteria living above the waterline convert it to sulphuric acid, which eats concrete from the inside out. The lid, the access risers and the inside of the upper walls are the usual first failure points. Polyethylene is completely immune to this — it's an inert plastic. Concrete also cracks.
