# Septic Tanks for Acreage Properties

Acreage blocks have the room to do septic right: **1500L for couples and small families, 2500L for 4+ person households**, with an absorption trench sized to your soil's percolation rate. Poly tanks deliver to any property a ute can reach.

## Sizing for acreage dwellings

Acreage households are usually the same size as urban households — sizing follows occupancy, not block area. The block size matters for the absorption trench: more land means more freedom in trench layout, more separation from dams/creeks/bores, and easier compliance with council setback rules.

-   **Couple or 2–3 people:** 1500L
-   **4–6 person family:** 2500L three-chamber
-   **Main house plus granny flat / second dwelling:** Separate tanks per dwelling

## Siting on a large block

Standard setbacks (varies slightly by council): 3–6m from dwellings, 6m from property boundaries, 30–100m from dams, bores and waterways. On a 5+ acre block these constraints rarely bind — your plumber sites the tank for shortest drain run from the house and an absorption trench on the downhill side. ## Drainage and soil considerations

Acreage soil types vary widely — sandy loam, heavy clay, rocky ground. Your plumber will do a percolation test ("perc test") to size the absorption trench. Heavy clay needs a longer trench; well-drained sandy soil needs less. The tank stays the same — only the trench changes.
