# Septic Tanks for Off-Grid Homes

## Why conventional septic wins off-grid

Off-grid wastewater is about **reliability with zero infrastructure**. A conventional septic tank works the same way it did 100 years ago: blackwater and greywater flow downhill from the house into the tank, solids settle to the bottom and break down anaerobically, liquid effluent overflows into a soil absorption trench. No pumps, no blowers, no electronics, no service technician.

Compare that to an AWTS (aerated wastewater treatment system): continuous power draw (200–600W mains-equivalent), quarterly mandatory servicing ($300–$500/year), and dozens of potential failure points. For a remote build where every kWh comes from your solar array and the nearest service technician is two hours away, conventional septic isn't just easier — it's usually the only viable option.

## Sizing for off-grid households

-   **Tiny home / 1–2 person off-grid build:** 1500L
-   **2–4 person off-grid home:** 1500L (generous) or 2500L
-   **4+ person off-grid family home:** 2500L three-chamber

Off-grid households tend to use less water than mains-connected households (tank water is finite, hot water needs solar/wood input), so the tank often handles more occupants than the standard sizing suggests.

## Greywater diversion options

Some off-grid builds divert greywater (kitchen, laundry, shower) to a separate sub-surface irrigation system, sending only blackwater (toilet) to the septic tank. This dramatically extends pump-out intervals and provides irrigation water for fruit trees.
