Where the cost difference actually comes from
The raw material cost difference between a 1500L poly tank and a 1500L concrete tank is modest. The big swing in total price comes from logistics and installation. A 61 kg poly tank fits on a standard ute, can be carried into position by two people, and lowered into a hand-dug or excavator-cut hole. A 1500L concrete tank weighs the same as a small car — it needs a HIAB truck to deliver, a crane or excavator to place, wider site access for the truck, and frequently a second day on site because of all that.
Add freight to a rural block (concrete tanks cost 5–10× more to freight than poly), add crane hire, add extra excavator hours, and the all-in cost gap between concrete and poly for a typical Australian dwelling sits between $1,200 and $3,000+ in poly's favour. That gap exists before you even look at the tank price itself.
Lifespan and failure modes
Concrete's headline weakness in septic service is H2S corrosion. Anaerobic decomposition inside the tank produces hydrogen sulphide gas; bacteria living above the waterline convert it to sulphuric acid, which eats concrete from the inside out. The lid, the access risers and the inside of the upper walls are the usual first failure points. Polyethylene is completely immune to this — it's an inert plastic.
Concrete also cracks. Ground movement, expansive clay soils, vehicle traffic above the tank, and (in alpine areas) freeze-thaw cycles can all crack concrete tanks over time. Poly flexes instead of cracking. In Australian soil conditions, certified poly septic tanks have a design life of 30+ years and most manufacturer warranties reflect that.
When concrete is still the right choice
Concrete still wins in a few narrow scenarios: extreme vehicle traffic directly above the tank (a heavy-truck-rated lid is sometimes spec'd), bespoke very-large-capacity tanks (10,000L+ where a one-piece poly mould isn't available), or specific council requirements in unusual soil conditions. For the standard small-to-medium Australian dwelling — tiny home, granny flat, cabin, farmhouse, off-grid build — poly is the right answer.
What about fibreglass and AWTS?
Fibreglass: Mid-weight, mid-price, similar lifespan to poly. Less common in Australia than either concrete or poly. The structural fibre matrix can delaminate over very long timeframes; poly does not.
AWTS (aerated wastewater treatment system): A different product class entirely — it's a treatment plant, not a settling tank. AWTS units cost $5,000–$15,000+ to buy, require quarterly servicing ($300–$500/year) and a power connection. They produce higher-quality effluent suitable for surface irrigation, but for a standard rural block with adequate land for a conventional absorption trench, an AWTS is overkill. Frequently asked questions
Are poly septic tanks as good as concrete in Australia?
Yes. Modern polyethylene septic tanks certified to AS/NZS 1546.1 perform identically to concrete in everyday service — both are watertight, structurally sound for direct burial, and have a service life of 30+ years. Poly is lighter, easier to install and immune to the H2S gas corrosion that eats concrete from the inside.
Why is poly cheaper than concrete?
A 1500L poly tank weighs 61kg; a 1500L concrete tank weighs 600–2,000kg. The freight, crane, machinery and labour required to install concrete are the bulk of the price difference. The raw materials are similar — it's the logistics that cost.
Will a poly septic tank float or pop out of the ground?
Only if installed incorrectly. Empty poly tanks can float in waterlogged ground if backfilled without water-loading or anti-flotation collars in high water-table sites. Your licensed plumber follows the installation method in our spec sheet — concrete backfill collars or partial water-fill during burial fully prevent this.
Do poly tanks crack?
No. Polyethylene flexes under load instead of cracking. Concrete tanks crack from ground movement, sulphate attack and freeze-thaw cycles — those failure modes don't apply to poly. The most common concrete failure mode (H2S corrosion of the lid and walls above the waterline) cannot happen in poly.
Which has a longer warranty — concrete or poly?
Poly typically wins on warranty length. Concrete tanks are usually warranted 1–5 years. Our poly tanks carry an extended manufacturer warranty and the expected service life of certified poly septic tanks is 30+ years in normal Australian soil conditions.
Can I install a poly tank myself?
In NSW, QLD and VIC, the tank-to-house connection and final commissioning must be done by a licensed plumber/drainer regardless of tank material. Excavation and backfill can sometimes be done by the property owner under the plumber's direction. See our council approval guide for details.
