Failure modes by material
Concrete fails from the top down. Anaerobic decomposition produces hydrogen sulphide gas in the airspace above the effluent. Bacteria in the moist concrete above the waterline convert that gas to sulphuric acid, which etches the concrete and eventually the rebar. Lids and risers are the usual first point of failure. Cracking from ground movement and sulphate-rich soils accelerates the process.
Polyethylene is inert. The same gas conditions that destroy concrete have zero effect on poly. The realistic limits on poly tank life are UV exposure (not an issue once buried) and physical damage during install. Both are eliminated by following the standard installation procedure.
What actually shortens tank life
- Skipping pump-outs. Solids overflow into the absorption trench and clog it. Replacing a trench costs more than installing a new tank.
- Wet wipes, sanitary products and food waste down the toilet or sink. They don't break down — they accumulate.
- Bleach, paint, solvents, oils kill the bacterial colony the system relies on.
- Heavy vehicles over the tank or trench. Cars are fine on a buried tank with adequate cover; trucks and tractors are not.
- Excessive water use from leaking taps or undersized tanks doesn't kill the tank, but it overloads the trench and shortens its life.
How to get to 30+ years
Buy a certified poly tank, size it correctly (most rural households need 1500L; larger or multi-household setups need 2500L+), have it installed by a licensed plumber to the manufacturer's spec, pump it out every 3–5 years, and don't put non-biodegradables down the drain. Eventually, yes — but trenches usually outlive the tank in well-maintained systems. A bio-mat forms in the trench over decades and slowly reduces soil infiltration. Splitting flow across two trenches and resting one annually extends absorption-trench life significantly.
